This selection of drums from our collection show the main stages in the development of the drum.
1. 14"x12" rope tension, brass shelled drum by George Potter of Aldershot. Hide skins, gut bottom snare only.
2. 14"x12" rope tension, brass shelled drum. Hide skins, gut bottom snare only. Maker unknown.
3. 14"x12" rope tension drum made by the Whaley-Royce Co. of Toronto.
4. 14"x12" reproduction rope tension drum. Colours of the 17th/21st Lancers (charge of the Light Brigade).
5. 14"x4" rope tension drum. Originally fitted with a gut snare and calf heads. Rope is pulled tight over tensioning wheels.
6. 10"x7" five tension rod drum. Rods are tensioned from one end only. Hide skins, gut snare.
7. 14"x5" eight tension rod drum. Rods are tensioned from one end only. Hidec skins, gut snare.
8. 14"x12" eight tension rods bolted to shell (early lug design), wood hoops, hide skins, gut snare.
9. 14"x10" single strained snare by Beverly, employing short lugs and simple metal hoops.
10. 14"x12" twin snared Beverly. Short lug, chromed metal shell.
11. 14"x12" twin snared Beverly. Short lug, maple ply shell?
12. A very early premier royal scot with 8 lugs, an internal parallel snare, the bottom snare usually being strained gut.
13. 14"x12" Carlton 'Gaelic', 8 lug wooden shell, parallel snares top and bottom.
14. 14"x12" 8 lug Premier Royal Scot, wooden shell, parallel snares top and bottom.
15. 14"x12" Carlton Gaelic. Metal shell, top snare parallel, bottom snare strained.
16. 14"x12" Legato Caledonian. Metal strip lug design.
17. 14"x12" Royal Scot. 10 lug model.
18. 14"x12" Super Royal Scot. !0 lug, metal top bearing edge, machined tension hoops.
19. 14"x12" Super Royal Scot. Metal top bearing edge, machined tension hoops, 12 reinforced lugs.
20. An Australian 'Legato K'. An early attempt at catering for 'kevlar' skins, based on the banjo tensioning principle.

22. 14"x10" steel shelled drum by 'Argyll'. Both skins high tension, both snares internal.
23. A Premier HTS 200. Their initial model of HTS that fully catered for the kevlar skins without any failure of the drum.
24. An early Andante with triple point adjustment on the top, internal snare.
25. A Remo Legato. Similar to the Legato K, this was produced by Remo USA after they took over the Legato name.
26. A later Andante, model DTS6
27. A South African 'Synshell' made by Tony Jansen Percussion (TJP). The shell is formed from double butted fibre glass.
28. An American Yamaha MTS (Multi Timbre Snare). This is produced with an internal 'cable' snare, employing gut on the underside.
29. Andante's later model, the Reactor. This provides a very crisp sound.
30. Flint Percussion's new Super XTS, weighing in at only 4Kg.
